The deal allows for codeshare arrangements between Air Tahiti Nui and American Airlines to destinations in Canada.

It also allows Air France to set up codeshare flights with Delta Air Lines.

The French Polynesian director of civil aviation, Georges Puchon, told Radio 1 in Tahiti it took two years to reach the agreement which fits into the framework of an existing agreement between France and Canada.

He said while no direct flights are planned for the moment, the new agreement will boost tourism.
